A school tie helped the Kurla railway police identify the bodies of two persons who were suspected to have been killed in a train accident near Vidhyavihar station on July 3. “The deceased, identified as Harsha Shankarlal Roopchandani, 35, and her daughter Simran, 13, were residents of Ulhasnagar. Simran was studying in Std VI of Scared Heart English School at Kalyan. Harsha is a housewife,” said senior police inspector Dilip Gore of Kurla railway police station.

The incident took place around 9.30pm. When the railway police found the bodies near the station, there was nothing on the bodies to identify the deceased. However, the girl, who was wearing her school uniform, helped the police. On her tie was written Scared Heart English School.

The railway police then contacted all the Scared Heart English Schools in Mumbai, with the girl’s photos and a detailed description. When they did not get any response in Mumbai, the railway police contacted the Scared Heart High school at Kalyan.

The school responded by saying that a girl named Simran Roopchandani was missing. The police took the residential number of the Roopchandanis and contacted Shankarlal Roopchandani. Roopchandani told them that his wife and daughter were indeed missing since July 3 and a missing complaint was registered at Ulhasnagar police station. Roopchandani, his brother-in-law Gauri Shankar Lound and a teacher from Simran’s school visited Kurla railway police station on July 6. The police took them to Rajawadi Hospital where they identified the bodies of Harsha and Simran.

Meanwhile, the police are yet to find out whether the mother and daughter committed suicide or were knocked down by a train.
