State government has plans to send 50 students from minority communities abroad for postgraduate courses. The state will give a grant of Rs10 lakh per student per year. Youngsters from the Muslim community are expected to get majority of the benefits of the scholarship.

After a consistent follow-up by a group of Muslim MLAs in the state assembly, finance minister Ajit Pawar announced the provision of Rs5 crore for the scholarship last week. This is the first time that the students from the minorities — including Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, Parsi, Sikh and Jain communities — will get the provision.

A proposal submitted to the finance department by Maulana Azad Arthik Vikas Mahamandal (MAAVM) has stated that the maximum limit of the scholarship is to be Rs10 lakh. “If the amount allotted to any student is less than that, the rest could be utilised for other students. The number of the scholarships given to the six communities will be based on the population ratio. However, if any of the communities fail to utilise the designated amount, it will be given to the other communities,” said Amin Patel, head, MAAVM.

The Muslim youths (Muslims constitute 10.5% of state’s population) are expected to benefit the most from the scholarship as the enquiries to various corporations and assistance groups for higher education have been higher from the community. “We get nearly 20 applications from students wishing to pursue higher education abroad every year, but the MAAVM has no provision for such scholarships. We give scholarships up to Rs2000 a year or so for studies. This would help us in sending youths from minorities to study abroad,” Patel said.

Finance minister Ajit Pawar said that his department would make supplementary allocation for the same in the monsoon session scheduled to start in June.
