The crime branch sleuths interrogating gangster Santosh Shetty are seeking more information about one Dawood, a Chinese national, who was allegedly going to help him set up a fake currency syndicate in partnership with Chhota Rajan.

This Dawood is not to be mistaken with India’s fugitive don Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar, who is presently believed to be holed up in Karachi, Pakistan.

According to sources, Rajan and Shetty wanted to start a US counterfeit currency syndicate. As it was not easy to procure the paper to print the fake notes, the duo approached Dawood. The Chinese national, whom the sleuths believe deals in drugs and fake currency, agreed to help them for Rs6 crore.

Rajan and Shetty agreed to pay Rs3 crore each, but the project got struck as Dawood demanded another Rs3 crore because of the increased risk from the Chinese intelligence and police authorities.

The duo agreed.

But, Shetty, who was running short of funds, asked Rajan to pay the extra Rs3 crore and suggested that they would share the profit incurred accordingly.

However, Rajan said he would pay Shetty’s share only if he handed over his Jakarta restaurant to Balu Dokre, Rajan’s trusted aide.

The officials said that this infuriated Shetty because he, along with his accomplice Bharat Nepali, had saved Rajan from a near-fatal attack from Chhota Shakeel’s men in 2000. This led to more tension between the duo.

Later, when Dokre was killed in Bangkok by Shakeel’s men, Rajan suspected that Shetty had leaked information about his location to Shakeel.

This deepened the rift between the two, finally resulting in Shetty leaving the Rajan gang.
