Two days after slamming actor Salman Khan for his remarks on the 26/11 terror attack, Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray on Tuesday made it clear that the actor’s family is patriotic in the true sense of the term. But he also said that Salman should keep his mouth shut on things other than cinema.
In an editorial in party mouthpiece Saamna, Thackeray said there is no reason to harbour anger against Salman. “Since Salman has apologised, we do not want to increase the debate. Even his father agrees that he (Salman) is a foolish person,” said Sanjay Raut, MP and editor of Saamna.
He said Salman’s father, Salim, is a secular person and a true nationalist. “He has always stood against communalism… and has chanted the slogan of ‘Vande Mataram’. We appreciate that Salman did not make a fuss about the apology, as Shah Rukh (Khan) did, and now we want to close the issue.”
Thackeray said in his editorial that the masses of the country, and not the elite, have criticised Salman over his comments. “The person who was killed by Salman’s car was a poor man. So it will be better if Salman keeps his mouth shut,” Thackeray wrote.
Salman came under fire from the Sena after he said in an interview to a Pakistani news channel that the 26/11 terror attack was hyped because only the rich were targeted. After wide criticism of his remarks, he apologised, saying he was sorry if his statements had caused hurt.
Salim Khan is considered close to the Thackeray family. He had even written an article on Thackeray, on the latter’s birthday, in Saamna.
