Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan has reportedly admitted to bashing up an NRI businessman at a posh restaurant in Colaba late on Tuesday.

In a letter submitted to the Colaba police on Wednesday, Khan claimed that he had hit Iqbal Sharma in self-defence.

Police sources said the admission will be used to present a watertight case against him in court. They added that almost 24 hours after the alleged attack, Khan arrived at the Colaba police station late on Wednesday, where he was arrested.

"He gave us a letter admitting that a scuffle had taken place inside the restaurant. But, he claimed that what he did was an act of self-defence. The letter was signed by him. This letter will serve as crucial evidence, as Saif (Ali Khan) himself has admitted that he had a fight and hit Sharma," said an officer from the Colaba police station on the condition of anonymity.

It is being considered as damning evidence because it is a pre-written letter and not a statement to given to the police. "The statement of an accused before the police has no evidential value before court," said the officer.

The letter, the officer added, will be produced before court as evidence at the time of the filing of a charge sheet.

"If Saif (Ali Khan) was provoked and acted in self-defence, then he should have come to the police station and reported the matter. Sharma has given us his medical report, which will be one of the key evidence in the case," the officer said.

The police have ruled out questioning actor Kareena Kapoor and others with Khan at the restaurant. "We are relying on independent witnesses, such as hotel staff and other guests at the restaurant. We have enough witnesses to present a watertight case in court," said another police officer.

The Colaba police had taken Khan's photographs and fingerprints on Wednesday, which they said would be part of their records.

On Sharma's allegation that the police were slow in arresting Khan, senior inspector Vinod Sawant said, "As soon as he came here and narrated the incident, we registered an FIR and investigated the case immediately. The arrest was made in due course."
