Sachin Tendulkar fans donate to cancer cause

While the Indian team was toiling towards a historic win of World Cup last Saturday, many people extended their wishes to Sachin Tendulkar and the team by donating money for cancer afflicted children.

Nearly 130 people have donated money after the campaign started by indiancancer.org kicked off on April 1 ranging from Rs100 to Rs15,000. Nearly Rs1 lakh has been raised for the cause in Sachin’s name.

“We are extremely happy. Sachin will also value the good will of the common man. Each rupee is equivalent to a million rupees to team India. This good will has come a long way,” said Dr P Jagannath, chairman of department of surgical oncology at Lilavati hospital and Research Centre who runs the charity.

The bulk of the donations happened on Saturday, during the World Cup final match. The donations haven’t stopped since then. Even on Monday, some people donated money for the cause. Over 60 percent of the donations came from Mumbai. Three people donated Rs10,000 each, while two people donated Rs15,000.

Last year, Sachin was instrumental in raising a corpus of Rs1.35 crore last July. The website had started a drive where people could make a wish for Sachin for the World Cup final where people could donate even Rs100 towards the cause.

Sachin’s wife, Anjali had convinced him about the cause as cancer in children is largely curable. She herself was instrumental in raising Rs1 crore for the children that helped more than 40 children from across the county. Many of these children are from low income groups from remote areas of Maharashtra and India.
