An RTI activist was shot dead in broad daylight in Virar on Friday afternoon. The deceased, identified as Premkant Jha (45), was an RTI activist as well as the national level public relations officer of the Bhrashtachar Atyachar Virodhi Samiti. At first a mistaken case of accidental death was registered by the Virar people, amended when a bullet was found in his head.

Jha was a resident of Gurudutt Nagar, Fulpada in Virar (E). The victim was thought to be heading towards his residence on his Enfield bike when his body was discovered en-route near his bike. Initially suspected to be a casualty of rash driving, police send his body to JJ Hospital for a post mortem after his family insisted that they suspected foul play. The discovery of the bullet was commenced the murder investigation.

“When we saw my father’s body, we knew it was not an accident,” said Vipin Jha, the son of the deceased. “My father was an RTI activist. He busted many scams and corruption cases, and filed many RTIs against land mafias. We appeal to the police to look into the matter and bring the culprits to justice.”
