In the wake of the recent killing of an RTI activist in Bhopal, another case of an RTI activist getting threats has come to light in Mumbai. Interestingly, this time a senior police inspector of Navghar police station in Mulund could come under the scanner.

Ankur Patil, a Mulund based RTI activist who has been collecting information under the RTI Act against the corrupt elected representatives (DNA story “Netas with corruption charges unmasked”, dated September 1, 2011 ) has filed a complaint with the Joint commissioner of Police, Rajnish Seth against SPI Shrimant Ghule of Navghar police station for allegedly threatening him.

According to the complaint filed by Patil, Ghule warned him to refrain from filing any RTI application to fetch information against Prabhakar Shinde, the Shiv Sena corporator from Mulund. Ghule even threatened him to make an arrest. “This is the first and last warning I am giving you. Stop complaining and filing RTI against Prabhakar Shinde, otherwise it will cost to hard,” allegedly said Ghule. Patil has alleged Ghule of siding with the local corporator and threatening him on Shinde’s behalf.

“There are chances that Ghule will target me. I have
decided to file this complaint to avoid harassment,” said Patil. He has urged the police brass to take appropriate action against Ghule.

When contacted Ghule denied all the allegations. “I know Ankur Patil. But I have never made any threats to him and these are baseless allegations.”
