When caught for driving drunk and hitting a cyclist, injuring him, 41-year-old film producer Paramdeep Paramjeet Sandhu used his father’s name — a former inspector general of police from Punjab — to get out of trouble.

And, when that did not work, he abused and manhandled the policemen who arrested him and later accused them of assaulting him.

“On Monday morning, when Sandhu was produced in the Andheri metropolitan magistrate’s court, he alleged he was assaulted by the police. The court ordered a medical examination to be conducted to verify his claims and directed the police to conduct an inquiry into the allegation,” said senior inspector Nandkumar Mehtar of the Versova police station.

The court then remanded him in police custody for a day.

On Monday, at 1.20am, Sandhu was driving in a Ford Endeavour to his Juhu Omkar building on Juhu-Versova Link Road in Andheri (West) with his friend Poonam Sonpat, 30, who also lives in Andheri. Sandhu, who was reportedly drunk, lost control of his vehicle and rammed the car into a cyclist Ramprakash Singh, 33, at Swami Samarth Circle in Lokhandwala.

Instead of providing him help, Sandhu drove away. Abdul Kazi, whose car was following Sandhu’s car, saw the accident and chased the SUV, finally intercepting it near Four Bungalows. Kazi also alerted the police during the chase.

A mob gathered, thrashed Sandhu and brought him to the Versova police station.

“At the police station, Sandhu behaved in a high-handed manner and told the constables to let him go as his father is a retired IG from Punjab. Sandhu was drunk at the time of the incident, which was corroborated by the medical reports. He also abused and assaulted our constables and dared them not to register an offence against him,” claimed Mehtar.

“We have recorded Sonpat’s statement and let her go. Sandhu was then sent to RN Cooper Hospital for a medical examination. But, there too he reportedly got into an argument with the doctors and refused to give his blood sample for tests,” said Mehtar.

Singh, who suffered minor injuries, was discharged from the hospital after receiving treatment.

“Sandhu claimed that the vehicle belonged to him, but after checking the documents we found out that it was registered in the name of one Shyam Puri from Punjab,” said another officer.
