Central Railway’s 38 lakh commuters will soon have better facilities at all stations between Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) and Kalyan. The railways has approved a Rs 4.64-crore mega plan to upgrade and improve the quality of passenger facilities at all the 26 stations.
The platforms will have better quality flooring, pure drinking water, improved lux level of lights at stations, roofs over platforms and better toilets.
Orders worth Rs464.21 lakh have been placed for upgrading passenger amenities and work will begin by January-end or February and will be completed within six months, most likely before the monsoon.
Central Railway top officials had said improving public toilets was one of their top priorities. “We will seek corporate help to improve the quality of public toilets at stations,” general manager Subodh Jain had said.
Commuters have been complaining about the poor condition of stations.
“The problem at stations where height has been raised is that the granite seats surrounding the pillars being used by commuters to sit have sunk,” said Avinash Gorkhe, a commuter.
Although some stations have been revamped, the work has been shoddy.
“Take the case of Vikhroli (West). The tiles on the newly built ramps on the foot over-bridge in the south-end have come off and it is not even been six months since they were built. The work is shoddy,” said Jaya Goel, another commuter.
Senior officials said the revamp will make the stations more commuter-friendly.
“The Rs 4.64-crore plan will improve the quality of all 26 stations between CST and Kalyan (excluding Kalyan). These facilities will be in addition to the new foot overbridges and other projects simultaneously going on at the stations,” said a senior official.
