Mumbai: Continuing its mission to improve the infrastructure in the rest of Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) has decided to improve roads in four council areas. Raigad, Kulgaon-Badlapur, Ambarnath and Karjat will be getting financial aid worth Rs30.49 crore for construction and improvement of 15 major roads from MMRDA.

MMRDA in the past has been undertaking road projects for Mumbai city under the Mumbai Urban Infrastructure Project (MUIP). However, after tussles between the authority and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation about road maintenance, the authority has now decided to concentrate on road improvement in the rest of MMR only. In a recently held meeting of the authority, chief minister Ashok Chavan gave a nod to development and construction of roads which are either in a poor condition or need to be laid out.

Dilip Kawathkar, spokesperson of MMRDA told DNA that the basic objective behind this funding is to make internal roads motorable through out the year. "There are many internal roads in these council areas which are not motorable, especially during and after monsoon. Many a time, state transport buses are not able to reach far-off areas since these roads are not motorable enough. We are planning to construct these roads in such a way that vehicles can ply on them throughout the year," said Kawathkar.

According to the proposal approved by MMRDA in the authority meeting held on August 3, three roads in Kulgaon-Badalapur municipal council area, six in Raigad municipal council jurisdiction and four in Karjat are set for a face-lift. As per the proposal, as much as 90% of funds for the road improvement will be provided by MMRDA.
