Diamonds and gold ornaments worth Rs19.75 lakh were stolen from an electronic safe inside a Kandivli (West) flat when the family was out of town.
“The robbery was discovered on Thursday when the family returned home and Kinnari Somani opened the safe to wear her ornaments on Dusshera,” said a police officer.
The police suspect it is an inside job as the safe password was only known to the Somanis. “The electronic safe was not broken. This means the robber knew the password,” said H Pimple, senior police Inspector.
Dinesh Somani, who runs a cargo courier service, and his wife Kinnari told the police that their three domestic helps and their son’s tutor were regular visitors at flat in Ronik Apartments on MG Road.
Pimple said: “Their domestic helps are uneducated, so it seems unlikely that they could have done this. But, we are still questioning them.”
