The widening of a road by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) in Kalyaninagar has snapped the underground electric wires of street lights and affected the water supply to Akashdoot Housing Society in the area.

Residents have demanded immediate repairs for the functioning of street lights and regular supply of water. “Over a week ago, the PMC suddenly started digging one side of Road No 12 to increase the width by around four feet. Ever since then, the street lights have not been functioning at the place where the work is going on,” said Dhairyashil Vandekar, a social worker of the area.

According to Vandekar, since the street lights are not on, using that lane at night has become dangerous. “The side of the road has been dug up. At night, there are chances of mishaps taking place. Several senior citizens and children use this road to go to the adjacent joggers’ park,” said Vandekar.

The widening of the road had also damaged a water pipeline, which resulted in stoppage of water supply to Akashdoot, alleged residents. “Although the damaged part of the pipeline was repaired, no efforts were taken to cover it. It is still open. Moreover, water supply is erratic and at low pressure. This is because the repair work of the pipeline was not done properly,” said the residents.

The residents are not opposed to any kind of development work in the area. “However, work must be carried out under supervision and the PMC should ensure it does not create problems for us,” said the residents.

Vandekar demanded that the PMC must complete the half-done work immediately and ensure the street lights work. Residents of Akashdoot have asked regional ward officer, Vasant Patil, PMC official in-charge of electrical works, Devidas Gaikwad, to complete the work on priority.
