He allegedly failed to take precautions at site in Pimpri leading to death of motorcyclist; second such case in recent past.
Continuing the crackdown against road contractors who create traffic hazards by carrying out work without taking adequate precautions, the police booked a contractor in connection with a fatal accident that took place in Pimpri on Wednesday night.
The police said failure of road contractor Basappa Bhimappa Hausamani (45) to adopt safety measures at the site resulted in the death of a motorcyclist.
He has been slapped with charges of causing danger or obstruction in public way or line of navigation according to section 283 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860 and continuing nuisance after injunction to discontinue as per section 291.
The police said Hausamani has undertaken the work of widening the road and dug a trench to facilitate it near the Dhangarbaba Chowk.
Motorcyclist Yasim Imamsaheb Inamdar (23) of Kalewadi, who was going home, fell into the trench on Wednesday night.
The victim was shifted to a nearby private hospital, where the doctors tried in vain to revive him.
Assistant police inspector MS Sawant of Pimpri police station said, “After the incident, we visited the accident spot and found that the company that undertook the work had not implemented any safety measures. Neither did it display a signboard, reflectors or blinkers, nor did it appoint a guard at the site to caution motorists.’’
This is the second case wherein a road contractor has been held responsible for a mishap and booked.
On February 21, the Chatuhshrungi police filed a case against Milind Madhukar Shrirao (45) a project manager of Logan India Pvt Ltd in connection with a mishap: On February 15, a truck overturned in a trench dug up at Balewadi on the stretch of Katraj-Dehu Road bypass, where the company is carrying out road-widening work.
