Autorickshaw federations, who were protesting legal action against over-crowding of three-wheelers, called off their two-day-long strike on Tuesday evening, following intervention of the Pune district administration.

Two autorickshaw federations had gone on a flash strike on Monday following the Pune regional transport office (RTO) and city traffic police crackdown on three-wheelers resorting to overloading in ferrying students to schools and back home.

The unions decided to call off the strike after a meeting with district collector Vikas Deshmukh, who assured them of an amicable solution soon. Besides, there was a growing pressure from parents to resume services as they were facing problems in ferrying children.

“We heeded to the parents’ request,” said the treasurer of rickshaw federation, Bapu Bhave.

On Tuesday, Rickshaw Panchayat, the largest union of autorickshaws in Pune, staged a demonstration for regional transport officer, Arun Yeola, on how an autorickshaw can safely carry 10 schoolchildren.

The auto had a wooden plank fixed opposite the seat meant for commuters. While five children sat on the wooden plank, the other five sat on the seat.

Yeola, apparently, was unimpressed and said that allowing 10 children in an auto was illegal. “How can they modify autorickshaws to take more students? They can carry only four children as per the state government’s guidelines,” he said, adding that the authorities would examine the unions’ demands and send a report to the government.

Deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Vishwas Pandhare told DNA that the crackdown would continue and action would be taken against autorickshaws carrying more than four children.
