Lazy police personnel shirking duties, beware! For, the administration in the western region is planning the use of radio-frequency identification device (RFID) technology to monitor your movement, especially on patrol duty.

The move is aimed at bringing down the crime rate in the western region. At least eight  police stations in the northern parts of the city (Zone XI) are already experimenting with the project for a few months now.

Crucial spots in areas where police presence is necessary, like schools, colleges, hospitals, banks, vital installations, places of worship and VIPs’ homes, will be first identified. RFID-enabled cellphones will be given to patrol personnel and mobile vans.

While visiting these places, they will have to scan their chip-enabled mobile at a scanner planted at the spot. The location of the mobile and the time of scan will be registered with the server. Its report will then be forwarded to senior officials for evaluation.
