Retired army men will soon be guarding civic hospitals in the city. In an attempt to augment security at all Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) hospitals, plans to rope in ex-defence personnel for the job are in place.
The BMC is also mulling a proposal to get the existing guards to train under a paramilitary security agency.
“The guards will be trained either by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) or a similar state-run security agency,” said Manisha Mhaiskar, additional municipal commissioner. “This move will leverage the efficiency of the guards and will also enhance the public interface,” she added.
The plan was put forth by a group of doctors from KEM Hospital. “Rather than increasing the number of guards manning the hospitals, the civic body intends to make the security system more effective,” added Mhaiskar.
In addition, the BMC is also contemplating proposals to elevate the medical services at civic hospitals in the city. Plans are in place to tackle medical emergencies and disastrous situations more competently.
A triage system of need-based assessment will be implemented at the hospitals. “This system will prioritise patients on the basis of the severity of their ailments,” said a senior official from the public health department.
The health department will now also have a single, 24x7, channelised information system. The BMC is currently exploring public-private partnership (PPP) options to implement the idea.
