The voice for not having an elevated metro is still loud, and on Thursday it was taken to the Mantralaya.

Residents, along with their elected representatives, met the chief minister to protest the elevated second phase of the Metro route. The Charkhop-Bandra-Mankhurd route is facing objection from residents on issues ranging from privacy to allegations of high cost and bad planning.

The delegation, led by local MP Priya Dutt, included MLA Baba Siddiqui, Krishna Hegde and residents from Bandra and Juhu. A presentation that weighed pros and cons of both the elevated and underground metro lines was given.

Dutt said, “Some people did some research and showed MPs how we need to go underground or the suburbs will get more congested. Elevated can work in places where roads are wide, but here we don’t have ample space. Railway transport can’t be looked at with a future of five years and it cannot stand like some skywalks that have practically no use.”

“I had raised the issue of only Reliance being awarded the contract without bidding. Bidders for the metro line in Hyderabad, around the same time, quoted half the price of what we are spending here on our metro,” said Siddiqui.

“There will be a problem of privacy and the four-lane roads will reduce to two if the pillars come up. Authorities will have to do away with skywalks on which they have spent so much money recently,” said Ashoke Pandit, resident of JVPD scheme.
Bandra resident Shyama Kulkarni said, “We told them that if they do not have the money, they should make arrangements for it before beginning the second phase. Elevated metro was proposed stating that the suburbs have less population compared to the city while the reality is that they are three times as much dense. The CM seemed open and positive to what we said and asked us to meet with the Delhi metro man Sreedharan.”
