Putting their love for Shakespeare and belief in the ideology of Osho in a form of the remix of the Shakespeare classic Hamlet, two sanyasins of Osho International Meditation Resort look forward to bring in a change in the thought process of the people about meditation.

The play, titled Shakespeare Remix, will be staged at Nehru Memorial Hall on Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Road in Pune Cantonment on February 19 at 7 pm.

Former British political reporter and a follower of Osho, Peter Waight alias Anand Subhuti, has penned the play while London-based film-maker of Indian origin Ragni Chandrethia has produced it under her production company DreamUp Productions.

Anand Subhuti, in his attempt to give message that notwithstanding tragedies, one should give another chance to life, has transformed the Shakespearian classic tragedy into a comedy.

Talking to DNA, Anand Subhuti said, “I aim to present the art of meditation to the public in an entertaining way through my play, and one of the major challenges in the play is to show how meditation can transform any situation.’’

He added, “We want Osho’s vision to reach a wider audience. We want people to know that even if life is full of tragedy, there is always a positive side.’’

However, students of Shakespearian literature are cautious about the experiment.

Raj Rao, a professor of English at University of Pune, feels, “It cannot be spelt out what the play holds until we attend one of its performances. If the writer is ironic and satirical, then it may be a great piece.’’

Marathi playwright Satish Alekar is of the opinion that anyone can play with a classic if “he is ready to shoulder the responsibility of the consequences.’’

The play is set where William Shakespeare is writing Hamlet, which he considers to be his masterpiece. However, with Elizabeth I having grown to be old and bitter, she has commanded that only tragedies should be performed.

However, when Shakespeare’s wife Anne Hathaway finds out that all the main characters in her husband’s new play are going to die, she decides to intervene. She rescues Ophelia, who wants to drown herself after being rejected by Hamlet.

Slowly, the entire cast rebels against Shakespeare, choosing life and love over misery and death.
