Kannada actress Maria Susairaj left the Arthur Road jail after three years on Saturday morning. The 30-year-old actor was escorted to a car by a posse of policemen as there was a huge media presence outside the jail. Susairaj was quickly whisked into a waiting white Honda City car with tinted glasses by an unidentified person. A police van escorted her outside the Byculla jail compound, raising speculation over the ‘special’ treatment given out to Susairaj. Even family members and friends of Grover criticised the ‘special treatment’ accorded to Susairaj.

Immediately after leaving the jail, Susairaj went to the Mahim church, were she spent close to half an hour. Maria could be seen crying as she offered prayers. From there, Susairaj is believed to have gone to a relatives place before addressing a chaotic press conference in the evening.

Susairaj’s counsel Sharif Sheikh contended that she had already served three years in jail, as provided under Section 201 of IPC, and “keeping her in jail for more days would be like illegal confinement.”

According to Sheikh, Susairaj was set free as she had already completed the sentence as an undertrial and after she deposited a fine of Rs50,000 on Friday in the court. A fine of Rs1 Lakh was alos slapped on Mathew, which   will be given as compensation to Grover’s family members.

The court’s judgment came a day after it held that the killing of Neeraj Grover was not an act of premeditated murder and absolved Susairaj and Emile Jerome of the murder charge. Susairaj has been convicted for destruction of evidence under IPCSection 201, while Jerome has been convicted for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The verdict came as a major setback to the police and prosecution which now plan to challenge the judgment in the Bombay high court.
