If you’re a Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class X student, there’s no need to work up a sweat when you step into the examination hall on Thursday.

Irrespective of whether you have registered for school-based or board-based evaluation, the final examination accounts for only 40% of your total marks. The rest are taken from your cumulative school assessments.

The CBSE will see 5,008 students from Mumbai and 24,081 from the entire state sitting its examinations from Class X and 9,822 candidates from Maharashtra write the Class XII papers on Thursday.

It had introduced school-based examination for Class X students to reduce stress, but several candidates still prefer the board-based one since state board-run junior colleges do not accept applications from those who had attempted the school-based pattern.

Schools in the city claim that there is not much of a difference between the two patterns.

Deepshikha Shrivastava, principal, Rajhans Vidyalaya, Andheri, said, “School-based or board-based examination is just a tag. If you look at it closely, all but the evaluation is the same in both the patterns. Papers are set by the board in both the patterns. Evaluation is also done on similar standards.

But, irrespective of the pattern of the examination that Class X students are appearing for, the final examination is only for 40% of the total marks. The remaining 60% of the marks, based on formative assessments at school, have already been sent to the board.”

Indu Mathur, principal of Apeejay School, Kharghar, echoed Shrivastava. “There is no reason to be more stressed for one pattern than the other.”
