In a tragic incident, the body of a city professor was disposed of by the police and the Sassoon General Hospital authorities recently after no one turned up to claim it.

Padmakar Bagul (40), a mathematics lecturer at Fergusson College, was run over by a Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) bus at Maldhaka Chowk under the Bund Garden police station on January 7.

Bagul, who was being treated for addiction at the Swargate-based Vipassana Centre since January 2, escaped from there on January 7. However, he was killed in an accident the same night. On January 13, the centre informed Bagul’s family that he was missing.

After the call, the hapless family began a frantic search for Bagul. It led them to the Bund Garden police station, where they learnt of Bagul’s death and that his body had already been cremated.

The family identified Bagul’s photograph and clothes shown to them by the police.

A resident of Aundh, Bagul is survived by wife Vaishali, son Neeraj (11) and infant daughter Dolly.

Shocked at the turn of events, the grieving family is confused whether to blame the Vipassana centre, the police or their own fate. They lamented that they could not even perform Bagul’s last rites.

Senior police inspector Suhas Nadgauda told DNA that Bagul did not have any identity document on him. “We sent his body to Sassoon and cremated it when no one turned up to claim it after three days,” he added.

The driver of the PMPML bus, Raju Shankar Jadahv (32) of Daund, was later arrested.

Vipassana Centre trustee Dutta Kohinkar-Patil told DNA that Bagul had had taken admission to a meditation course, but fled after five days.
