Political parties have termed the petrol hike move as politically motivated and have demanded that taxes be reduced to offer respite to the common man.

Vinod Tawde, general secretary of the state BJP unit, said that octroi and sales taxes on petrol should be reduced by the state government so that the hike is brought down to some extent. “Even the central government should have attempted to reduce the taxes before effecting the hike. It has once again proved that every step it takes is political and has nothing to do with the plights of the common man,” he said.

Echoing the voice, Shiv Sena spokesperson Neelam Gorhe said that the hike would worsen the hardship of the common man. “If the hike was inevitable, then the Centre should have thought of other sources to keep it reasonable. Another question I wish to raise is where does the amount of cess collected on the petrol by the state government go? It has been collecting cess in the name of employment guarantee scheme, which has been scrapped in the state,” she said.

Diwakar Raote of Shiv Sena said the substantial hike of Rs5 per liter is an indicator of the failure of the policies of the central government. “The hike is the result of the de-controlling of the petrol and the government had to de-control it because mobilisation of resources had badly affected. This is nothing else than the failure of the government policies,” he said.
