In a major development, three members of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) standing committee have proposed to reconsider the decision of building two skywalks in the city. The plan is to build it from Shivajinagar to PMC building and from Mahatma Phule Mandai (market) to Swargate.

Sunil Kamble (Bharatiya Janata Party), Ashok Harnaval (Shiv Sena) and Ashwini Kadam (Nationalist Congress Party) have moved the proposal for reconsideration. The committee would consider the proposal in its meeting on Tuesday.

After the original proposal was approved by the standing committee on May 19, it was put before the general body (GB) on the same day for ratification. Former leader of the house and NCP’s Anil Bhosale had publicly appealed to the members of the house to approve the proposal immediately. But the opposition members were against approving it without discussion.
Group leader of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) Ravindra Dhangekar told the media on Saturday that his party would oppose the proposal in the GB.

“In the civic body, ruling party members have become contractors and the MNS would oppose the proposal to oppose the trend of ruling members becoming contractors,” he said.
Shiv Sena group leader in the PMC Sham Deshpande told the media on Friday that the road from Shaniwarwada to Swargate is only 50-feet wide and building a skywalk would lead to traffic congestion.

“There is no need to build skywalk when the city already has good footpaths, built under the Jawaharlal Nehru national urban renewal mission (JNNURM),” he said.

The PMC standing committee on Thursday had approved a proposal to build two skywalks for pedestrians from Shivajinagar to PMC building and from Mahatma Phule Mandai (market) to Swargate. The Rs100-crore plan was to be carried out on design, build, own, operate and transfer (DBOOT) basis.
