Recruitments in Mumbai are set to increase, according to the job availability index of InfoEdge Ltd, the company that runs the job portal Naukri.com. In January, its Mumbai job index stood at 748, up 3% since December.

This suggests there would be more hiring activity in the coming months, the company said. Vacancies in the IT and ITeS sectors
rose 10% and 16%, respectively, in the same period, while demand for professionals with accounting skills and sales and business skills have increased by 7% and 4%, respectively. The index has been calculated based on job listings added to the job site month on month.

“With the beginning of the new year, the employment marketplace seems to be moving in a positive direction,” said Sumeet Singh, national head, marketing & communications, Info Edge. This is borne by the fact that Infosys is planning to hire 6,000 people in the Jan-March period, while Pune-based Zensar Technologies is looking at adding 150 people by March. According to Prameela Kalive, global head, talent management, the hiring strategies at Zensar have been altered with regards to the current market trends. “We have been focusing on reducing the hiring cycle time and enhancing the quality of recruits.”

According to career consultant Bhupesh Gupta, several institutes are getting good responses, with a number of companies visiting their campuses. “Some campuses have 40-50 firms, mainly software companies, visiting and making offers. Business is improving and that is getting reflected in the job market.”

However, according to E Balaji, CEO of staffing solutions firm Ma Foi Consultants, though there is improvement in the market — as several companies, especially IT ones, have to yet clear the backlog of offers they made in the past — they will not go all out and hire. “Hiring would be conservative. Earlier, if a firm made 300 offers in a single campus, it will now make just 50,” he said.
