The RDX-laden Indica car, seized in Ambala, was headed for some mall or multiplex. The nature and manner in which the RDX was kept in the car indicate that it was meant for large-scale destruction, most probably inside such commercial establishments, say security and forensic experts.

Investigators found the explosive hidden inside the front door panels of the car. “Each side had 2.5kg of RDX,” a central agency forensic expert said. “The car did not have power windows and the RDX was kept inside the door panel, below the windowpane.”

This modus operandi has the investigators worried. For, door panels are rarely checked at malls. Private security guards mostly check the bonnet and the boot of a car before letting it inside the parking area, a central security agency officer said. “The Ambala car shows terrorists wanted to exploit this loophole.”

The Indica car would have exploded if the door was opened or closed, another officer said. “It is also possible that the explosion would have happened as soon as someone lowered the windowpane,” he said. If an explosion did occur, the extent of damage is anybody’s guess because the car had 5kg RDX.

“Though the bomb was not assembled, there can only be a couple of possibilities,” another explosives expert said. “It would have been assembled through a circuit, connected to a timer and a detonator. The circuit would complete once the doors were opened or closed or the windowpanes were rolled down, which would have triggered the explosion.”

Investigations showed the car entered J&K on October 9 and left on October 12. “The bomb was not assembled as the doors needed to be opened and closed a number of times before it reached the target,” the expert said. “The RDX was planted in J&K, most probably by Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives.”

Now that a new modus operandi has come to fore, central intelligence agencies have decided to send a detailed advisory to all states regarding security in malls and multiplexes.
