Mumbai: Residents of First Pasta Lane at Colaba rejoiced every moment of it, as demolition men of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Thursday pulled down the kitchen of Kailash Parbhat, a landmark restaurant of Mumbai.

The kitchen, which produced delicious fresh ragda pattice and succulent gulab jamuns, will no longer exist after 15 days. The BMC has appointed a contractor at Rs1.76 lakh for the demolition.
The kitchen, which supplied majority of the items on the menu to its chain, will make way for a recreation ground that the residents have long fought for.

According to a civic official from 'A' ward, "The kitchen had violated fire-safety norms as per the fire department's report, and was violating Development Control Rules being on a plot meant for a recreation ground."

The official said the restaurant had done "some unauthorised construction" and were using the place for mass production of food that "essentially is done in an industrial area and not a residential area". He said the BMC had revoked the restaurant's licence to cook.

The locals had complained of constant air and noise pollution from the kitchen. Cooking activity, they alleged, went on till late night and cleaning of vessels started in the wee hours every day, disturbing their peace.

Vijay Advani, joint secretary, First Pasta Lane Association, said, "We are happy and pleased to see this (the demolition). Finally, the civic authorities have agreed that we were right all along. The residents have fought a prolong battle with Kailash Parbat and the BMC."
