Apparently taking a note of the grievances of the residents of Bavdhan, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Wednesday announced the cleaning of encroachments along the Ramnadi river before May 31.

The additional city engineer Vivek Kharwadkar on Wednesday gave assurance to the citizens of Bavdhan, who staged a 48-hour relay hunger strike outside the Ramnagar Colony gate that culminated on Tuesday.

Kharwadkar along with mayor Mohansingh Rajpal, additional municipal commissioner (general) Naresh Zurmure, divisional commissioner Vijay Dahibhate and other senior PMC officers went to the agitation site this morning and interacted with the residents.

The residents are irked by the slow pace of removal of encroachment. Last year, flash floods in the Ramnadi had played havoc in the Ramnagar Colony and other housing societies of Bavdhan.

Rajpal also assured the citizens that proper action will be taken to remove the encroachments and to safe-guard the interests of
the people.

Kharwadkar pointed out that after last year’s flash floods, the PMC had sanctioned Rs50 crore for urgent works for removal of encroachments along the river bodies of the city.

“The major work will be improvement of the basin of Ramnadi. We have identified five spots, where the basin improvement work will commence within the next few days,” he assured.

The action plan for Ramnadi will be uploaded on the website of PMC within the next two days, he added.

He admitted that of the 350 km of water courses in the city, only 150 km have been mapped in the survey maps and the development maps of the city.

“The missing 200 km of water courses, are either heavily encroached or have been filled up. We are working on bettering the storm water drain system in the city,” Kharwadkar said.
Moreover, the civic body will launch a survey to identify the encroachments on Ramnadi.

This was in response to the citizens’ grievance that the width of the Ramnadi had decreased by 20% in the last year. “In case we find any encroachments, we will take steps to demolish them,” he stated.

Sunil Joshi and Vinod Bodhankar of Jal Biradari, Anupam Saraph of Baner Area and other residents of Bavdhan were present at the
occasion.
