Within an hour of his surrender before the Kalyan Railway Police today in connection with a 2008 rioting case in which North Indians appearing for railway recruitment examinations were assaulted, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray was arrested and later granted bail by the Kalyan magistrate.

The court granted bail on a personal bond of Rs1 lakh and ordered Thackeray to refrain from giving provocative speeches that may refer to any religion, caste or creed. Over 1,000 supporters of the MNS chief waited outside the court while the proceedings were under way.

Earlier in the day, Thackeray surrendered before the Railway Police in connection with a case of inciting violence against north Indian students appearing for a railway recruitment exam in October last year.

He surrendered before the Kalyan Railway Police following an order of the Bombay High Court. According to the railway police, immediately after he surrendered, he was arrested and produced before the magistrate.

The court sent Thackeray to judicial custody till July 13. However, his lawyers immediately moved a bail application, and after being granted bail, Thackeray was whisked away to his Shivaji Park residence.

The Thane police had deployed a massive security cover to ward off any trouble as thousand-odd MNS supporters thronged Kalyan court.

Last week, the high court cancelled the anticipatory bail granted to Thackeray by a Kalyan court in the matter, and ordered him to surrender by June-end.
