Activists of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) have probably for the first time jumped into action with regard to the work of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

Two zone presidents of the party from Bandra (East and West) met senior MMRDA officials on Friday. They have asked the officials to rectify the rampant parking violations on the cycling track at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). The party workers will take “MNS style of action” if the irregularities were not taken care of within next few days.

According to the MNS Bandra zone presidents Tushar Aphale and Mangesh Mandke, a number of complaints were registered by residents and those intending to use the cycling track for exercise.

“People who wish to use the cycling track said that it is impossible to use it during the day as there are many parking related violations. In spite of clear sign boards put up by the authority, many cars are parked right on the cycling track. Moreover, the track’s condition is not at all good for cyclists. We had asked the officials of the land department to look into the matter. Although we have been given a verbal assurance that such parking violations will be dealt severely, we have told the officials that if this continues, we will take action “MNS style” against the wrongdoers,” said Aphale and Mandke.

The 13km cycle track was constructed at a cost of Rs6 crore by the authority and was recently opened by the chief minister. It had been in a controversy after reported that it had been opened in a half completed manner and a lot irregularities were observed, including leaking drainage, encroachment and mainly rampant parking.

When asked about the action taken against these violations, MMRDA spokesperson Dilip Kawathkar said, “The track is under the land department of the authority and they have been informed about the violations. Moreover, written communications have already being sent to the traffic police asking them to tow away cars illegally parked on the cycling track.”
