After playing truant during the four-month monsoon, the rain God has finally smiled giving people the much needed respite from the scorching heat and humidity.
Following havoc in Ratnagiri district claiming 11 lives and causing huge losses to property, rains lashed many parts of the city late on Friday evening.
“The strong low pressure area developed over Andhra Pradesh is resulting in heavy rains in some parts of the state. It is likely to move Westwards in days to come. We can expect heavy to very heavy rains in next two-three days,” said AB Mazumdar, deputy director general, IMD, Pune. “This is not an abnormal phenomenon as monsoon has not yet withdrawn from Mumbai,” Mazumdar said.
Rainfall also occurred at many places over south Konkan-Goa and south Madhya Maharashtra, at isolated places over Marathwada. However, weather was mainly dry over north Konkan, North Madhya Maharashtra and rest of the state.
Southwest monsoon was moderate over North east, East central and South Arabian sea and weak to moderate over West central Arabian sea.
Rain or thundershowers are likely at most places over south Konkan, Goa and south Madhya Maharashtra, at a few places over north Konkan, north Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada, in the next 48-hours.
Heavy rainfall at a few places with very heavy rainfall at isolated places is likely to occur over south Konkan Goa during the next 24-hours. Heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places over south Madhya Maharashtra during the same period. Mumbai city and neighbourhood is likely to get a few spells of rain or thundershower during the next 48-hours.
According to IMD, Colaba officials, moderate to heavy rainfall is likely to occur at most places over all South Konkan and and South Madhya Maharashtra districts. Light to moderate rainfall is likely to occur at a few places over all the districts of North Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada.
Heavy rainfall at a few places with very heavy fall at isolated places is likely to occur in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts and all districts of south Madhya Maharashtra during the next 24-hours.
