The deadline for the first-ever metro in the city running between Versova and Ghatkopar through Andheri may be technically seven months away, but the issues of obtaining permissions from railways are likely to prove a major “block” in getting the deadline met. DNA has learnt that the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) is yet to give a final nod for the actual construction to commence in the railways area.

The 11-km metro has a vital section of 183 metres which is a Rail Over Bridge over the suburban railway tracks after Andheri station on the north side. This stretch has one pillar of the steel bridge which is to be erected between two railway tracks. According to sources in the Reliance Infrastructure-led consortium, which is constructing the metro, the CRS has not formally given a clearance to this construction. “No deadline is of any meaning if the permissions are not obtained on time. Though the officials of WR are very cooperative with us and understand the importance of the metro to the city, their paperwork is extremely rigid making it difficult to get clearances on time,” said a source close to the development.

When asked about the development, Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd (MMOPL) director KP Maheshwari refused to comment on the specific issue. However, he said that the work for metro was now reaching its crucial stage. “Out of the total 1700 piles, only 45 still remain, while out of the 430 pile caps, 70 are to be done. We have almost completed 65 to 70% of pier caps,” Maheshwari said.
