Upcoming cricketer Rahul Sharma’s career has a blemish. Sharma was present at a sundown party in Juhu’s Oakwood hotel when the police had raided its premises in April, only to find 110 grams of cocaine on the floor.

As one who tested positive for substance abuse at the time, Sharma is likely to soon receive a call from Juhu police officials who are summoning again the 42 individuals they had earlier found consuming narcotics. The only problem that the police officials have this time around is tracking Sharma down. He happens to be touring Sri Lanka, wearing blue for the Indian national team.

“We will start summoning the second batch of people who have tested positive for drugs consumption from Monday. The senior officers will decide the course of action against those who are out of the country,” said senior inspector Arun Bhagat of Juhu police station. The offenders will first be summoned to the police station, following which they would be booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and finally they would be produced in court.

Further courses of action can only be decided in the presence of a judge, but police say that all the individuals at Juhu had been booked under a section which is of a bailable nature. There is a good possibility that they would be released on bail immediately. The police will first start questioning those who are present in the city.

BCCI officials have been tight-lipped over Rahul Sharma’s future. Rajiv Shukla did come out with a statement but he did not reveal much. “We are not going to take any action in haste. First we will study the report. We have got a provision in the players’ code of conduct, and accordingly we will proceed. We will also try to find out why it took so long for the Mumbai police to submit this report,” the IPL chairman said. The board officials say their president N Srinivasan will take a call on the issue, but he was not available for a comment.

It is learnt that no decision has been made on Sharma’s presence in the national team. “We’ve not received any instruction from the Board,” team manager Ravi Jain told DNA from Hambantota. However, the player was left out of the team for the first ODI, played against the hosts on Saturday. Even the selection committee has no knowledge about Sharma’s role with the Indian team. One selector has confided to this paper that the committee has not received any instruction to look for a replacement player.
