Only seven of the 260 sonography machines that were sealed in the state were for cases where sting operations against doctors were carried out. The rest were all sealed for technical reasons.

The Indian Radiological and Imaging Association (IRIA) is up in arms against what they call “harassment” on the part of various civic authorities. “If the harassment does not stop within a week then we will stop conducting sonographies on pregnant women,” said Dr Jignesh Thakker, the honorary secretary general of IRIA.

According to Indian Radiological and Imaging Association, there are actual only seven machines sealed for illegal sex determination tests. But rest of the machines were sealed for technical reasons such as not filling forms or not displaying a board in clinic about the Pre-conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act ( PCPNDT Act).

“For every 10 cases that require a sonography, only four cases are related to pregnancy. Most of our members say that if we stop sonography on pregnant women there will be a no violations of PCPNDT act. For in most of the technical formalities, rules and regulation in this act are related to sonography procedure for pregnant women. Once we declared that we are not conducting sonographies for pregnant women then there will no issue of violating this act” said Dr Jignesh Thakker.

He added that it is unfair that other patients are suffering as a result of the issue. “Now all radiologists are scared because of rampant raids on their centres. If the state government does not come with a solution then we will stop conducting sonography on pregnant women. The doctors who are guilty should be punished and innocent doctors should not be unnecessarily dragged in this raid,” he added.

But Varsha Deshpande, who is founder member of Lek Ladki Abhiyan, does not agree with association’s claims. She said, “Every body has to followed the law, they can’t overlook formalities. No offence is small or big under the law. In Jalgaon, we have secured a conviction for non-display of boards and non-maintenance of records and a punishment of one year
and fines.”
