If you have not paid your property tax as yet, you should do so by June 30, failing which the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will levy a penalty of 2% on you.

The PMC collected Rs3.72 crore by way of penalties for late payment of property tax in the last financial year. It started imposing the penalty after the state government amended the rules made under the Bombay Provincial Municipal Corporation (BPMC) Act, 1949, levying a penalty of 2% per month for delay in paying the tax.

In-charge of the property tax department and deputy municipal commissioner, Vilas Kanade, told DNA that property owners in the city should pay the tax before June 30 or they would be liable to pay penalty as per the new rule.

The state government had amended Rule 41 under the BPMC Act in April 2010. According to the revised rule, property owners have to pay tax for first half of the year within three months of getting the bill, and that for the second half should be paid by December 31.

A penalty of 2% per month would be charged on the amount of tax payable after the due date.

The revised rule was implemented in the PMC from October 2010. Till March 31, the PMC levied and collected Rs3.72 crore in penalty from 1,24,000 property owners, said Kanade. There are 7 lakh property owners in the city.
