Promising strict action against culprits in the Kolhapur sex cases, home minister RR Patil announced on Thursday that the report submitted by the assistant superintendent of police will be reviewed by Pune police commissioner Meeran Borvankar.

The home minister said that assistant superintendent of police (ASP) Maithilee Jha has already started a probe in the case, and the report will be submitted in the next couple of days. Commenting on the seniority of the officials probing the case and that of the officials involved, Patil said that it will not affect the investigation. Jha is the ASP, while the Kolhapur SP, who also has alleged links in the case, is senior to her.

Patil said that Jha has been given full liberty to probe the case, and the report by her will be based on facts. Labour minister Hasan Mushrif had demanded that the probe be handed over to Borvankar.

Head constable Yuvraj Maruti Kamble, 32, was arrested on Sunday night for raping a 25-year-old trainee woman constable. He had later alleged in court that he was being framed by senior officers who have been sexually harassing women constables. Kolhapur MP Sadashivrao Mandlik then claimed on Tuesday that he had gathered information about the involvement of senior police officers in sexual harassment.

Meanwhile, the home department has sent deputy superintendent of police (home) Vijay Parkale and police inspector Dnyaneshwar Mundhe on leave in connection with the alleged rape of the trainee constable, said minister of state for home, Satej Patil. In his statement to the police on April 24, Kamble had claimed that the two, along with police constable Avinash Powar, were the real culprits.

Satej Patil said that Jha has been instructed to record the statements of all 71 trainee women constables of Kolhapur undergoing training in Nagpur. The rape victim is also from the same batch. The minister of state, however, ruled out the possibility of transferring superintendent of police Yashasvi Yadav.
