The installation of new compressed natural gas (CNG) dispensing units at existing petrol pumps in the city is being delayed due to change in regulations mooted by the Nagpur-based Chief Controller of Explosives (CCoE).

However, four more CNG stations have been planned for the city. This was revealed to DNA by managing director of Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL), Shama Sundara. He said the daily supply of CNG in the city is sufficient for autorickshaws, and four more stations will reduce the pressure on existing stations.

The autorickshaw unions in the city have been alleging inadequate supply of CNG and have demanded more stations to reduce the long queues at the refilling stations.

Autorickshaws have been fitted with CNG kits following the direction of the high-power Bhurelal committee set up by the Supreme Court to suggest measures to control pollution.

Sundara said there are 8,000 autorickshaws running on CNG in the city while the daily supply of CNG is 30,000 kg. He admitted the number of stations should be increased for the convenience of autorickshaw drivers and to encourage more autorickshaw owners to convert their vehicles to CNG.

“We have 13 CNG stations in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, including three mother stations. Four more stations are coming up in Kasarwadi, Sinhagad Road, Market Yard and Hadapsar,” he said, adding that an online station will come up at Kothrud, which will be open 24X7.

“The CCOE has changed its rules and some formalities need to be completed for permission. This is delaying the start of other dispensing units. But these technical issues will be dealt with,” said Sundara.
