The Kothrud police in Pune arrested four collegians on July 1 for stealing motorcycles to perform stunts at night. A total of 11 bikes were recovered from their possession.

Those arrested have been identified as Tushar Dipak Kamble (19) of Sinhagad, Vikrant Shankat Kulkarni of Kothrud, Abhishek alias Pawan Sanjay Mane (19) of Wadgaon Sheri and Benjamin Raymond Franklin of Uttamnagar.

The four friends are first-year students in different city colleges. Senior police inspector Chandrakant Ghodke said, “The suspects used a master key to steal the vehicles. They used to meet on the outskirts of the city late at night to perform stunts on the two-wheelers.”

The collegians belong to well-to-do families and their parents work in private firms and government offices.

298 liquor dens raided, 318 held

The Pune rural police raided 298 liquor dens and arrested 318 suspects in different parts of the district in June.

Materials worth Rs19.03 lakh were recovered from the suspects. After taking charge on May 31, superintendent of police (Pune rural) Sandip Karnik has taken stringent action against criminals in the district. The police also raided 21 gambling dens, arrested 48 suspects and recovered Rs9.27 lakh.

Contractor in police net

A government contractor, Prashant Shantaram Doke (40) of Junnar, was on Tuesday remanded in police custody by a magistrate’s court till July 9 for allegedly cheating the public works department (PWD) to the tune of Rs 3.35 lakh. Doke was arrested by the Bund Garden police on Monday. Doke and six other accomplices — all still at large — prepared five forged promissory notes in the name of the PWD, favouring his Shri Sai Construction, for road repairs in Junnar taluka in 2009-10.

Extortionist gets 2-year RI

A 21-year-old Yerawada, Pune resident, Akram Husain Khan, was on Monday awarded two years rigorous imprisonment (RI) by judicial magistrate (first class), SM Padolikar, in connection with an extortion case. Khan is a history sheeter and has various body offences registered against him.

63 chain snatchers detained

The Pune police detained 63 chain snatchers and recovered eight pairs of gold earrings, three gold chains and four wallets containing cash during the palkhi processions in the city. The suspects hail from Beed, Ahmednagar, Solapur and other districts. The police are probing whether they were also engaged in the spate of chain snatching incidents in the city.
