Dr Vinit Shah (29), city-based student of a PG medicine course, has won Dr Sam CP Moses Gold Medal for being the national topper in general medicine exam of the Diplomate National Board (DNB).

Shah completed his post graduation in General Medicine from Poona Hospital and Research Centre (PHRC). He attributes his achievement to the practical training given at PHRC and personal guidance given to each student.

He says, “During the first year, we worked in the hospital from 8:30 am to 6:30 pm and did not get a single day off. We analyse the case history of the patients and plan their treatment, which is then assessed by our guide. There have been times when we worked for 36 hours at a stretch but, although working and studying simultaneously is challenging, the exposure makes it easier for us to crack the papers.’’

Other three PHRC students in his batch too cleared the exam. PHRC chooses four students every year and assigns each a guide who mentors them during the three-year programme.

“My guide Dr Mahesh Tulpule and other guides devoted a lot of their private time to train us. Apart from guidance from our personal mentors, all four guides analysed the case presentation of each student on a weekly basis,’’ Vinit says.

Although, he was among the top five in school (SM Choksey High School, Pune), Vinit was never in the merit list. Doing MBBS from BJ Medical College in Pune was the turning point in his life but, he still hadn’t expected to get the gold medal. “I stood second in the college but I never thought I would be the national topper, I only wanted to clear the exam because it is very tough.’’

Shah’s mentor at PHRC, Mahesh Tulpule, says, “Our hospital is one of the most sought after, but other students also feel that they have made the right choice. Even though, we were not certain that he would stand first, we thought that he deserved it.’’

Shah is now pursuing super specialisation in gastroenterology, which deals with liver and intestinal diseases, from Sir Gangaram Hospital in Delhi. Shah’s father, Sanjay’s medical condition played a vital role in his choice of subject for super specialisation.

“In 2009, my father had blood vomits and was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis. At PHRC, I came across hundreds of patients suffering from the disease. We got good advice from consultants of the hospital and I was aware of the latest research in the field.’’
