In order to educate youngsters in the age group of 12-19 years about cyber safety, the Rotary District 3131, will launch a special outreach programme from December 13. This was announced at a press conference held on Friday.
The project has been initiated by the Rotary clubs of Sinhagad Road and Gandhi Bhavan, Kothrud.
The presidents of both the clubs, Satish Ranade and Vaishali Bhagwat made the announcements and appealed to schools to contact them for arranging a special presentation to spread awareness among schoolchildren.
Bhagwat said, “The threats that a child can be exposed to while accessing the Internet are cyber bullying, cyber stalking, privacy invasion, cyber crime and child pornography.”Norton, anti-virus solutions provider, and the Internet and Mobile Association of India had conducted surveys.
The findings reveal that an average of over 60% children have had negative experiences online, while less than 50% parents know that their child has had such experiences.
The initiative will be inaugurated on December 13 at SM Joshi Hall at 11 am by additional commissioner of police, Anant Shinde, and Rotary district governor Mohan Palesha.
According to Ranade, “We ran this pilot project on experimental basis for two years and covered 10 colleges. Now we are officially running the project to reach out to students and parents through schools.”
