The trail of blood and wreckage left by the deathly joyride of Santosh Mane, has send shivers across the city.

DNA travelled the 25 km route taken by Mane along with vehicle insurance claim expert Amjad Sheikh Amanutullah, and by his estimate, the total damage done to 15 vehicles is more than Rs9 lakh.

Three two-wheelers, four autorickshaws, four cars, two mini buses, a goods carrier and a Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) bus bore the brunt of Mane’s drive of death.

For his joy ride, Mane, had chosen a Satara-bound bus (MH 14 BT 1532) from the depot, and apparently, drove away calmly from the Swargate bus terminus. Leaving the bus station, Mane, swerved sharply at the bus terminus and hit the handcarts of Ravi Murkute and Laxmi Patil. While both escaped unhurt, the handcarts were smashed to smithereens.

A Scooty Pep+ (MH 12 DD 825) was the first vehicle, to have come under the bus. The chasis of the Scooty was severely damaged and Amjad estimated that it would cost more than Rs10,000 to repair the damage. A Xylo travelling on the wrong side of the road was Mane’s next target as he rammed into the vehicle. It was estimated that it will cost Rs2 lakh to repair the vehicle.

Near the bus stand, Mane mowed two autorickshaws, whose drivers had a very narrow escape. Sakharam Patne was ferrying two passengers when Mane banged into his vehicle and. Patne and his passengers managed to escape with minor injuries but the autorickshaws were heavily damaged and it will cost Rs50,000 to repair them.

Suraj Pawar, an engineer from Maharashtra Institute of Technology (MIT), was the killer driver’s next prey. Pawar’s Pulsar came under the wheels of the bus, but he managed to jump to safety in time. The mangled bike bore witness to the intensity of the accident. It will cost around Rs30,000 to repair the bike.

Mane’s next victim was a goods carrier near the Seven Loves Chowk whose windscreen was smashed. Amjad estimated that the cost of repairing the vehicle would be Rs50,000.

Also, near the Seven Loves Chowk, Mane rammed into an Indica. Such was the impact that the engine of the vehicle resembled a mass of mangled metal and the estimated damage done to the vehicle is Rs50,000.

Crossing Seven Loves Chowk, Mane went to the Golibar Maidan Chowk and from there, he went to the Pulgate bus stand.

In the short distance till Pulgate bus stand, Mane rammed into two autorickshaws, two cars and a minibus. The total damage estimated to all the vehicles was almost Rs 3 lakh.

Umesh Dande was travelling towards Hadapsar in his autorickhsaw, when Mane rammed into his vehicle. “The hood of my autorickshaw was damaged but I was able to escape without any major injuries,’’ he said.

From Pulgate bus stand, Mane travelled towards Solapur Bazar police chowki, where police constable Kiran Pujari saw the bus and managed to save 5 pedestrians from being run over. He then traveled on the Napier Road on the wrong side, mowing down unfortunate. Puja Patil. Mane circled the Pulgate circle twice and then took the road towards Golibar Maidan and travelled past the Cantonment police station. Near Indira Chowk, off East Street, Mane rammed into a PMPML bus and a Swift car. While the PMPML bus’s windscreen was smashed, the Swift was hit from behind.

Amjad estimated that the total damage done to both the vehicles was almost Rs1 lakh. Once on East Street, Mane drove the bus toward Laxminarayan theatre via Salibury Park.

From Laxminarayan theatre, Mane drove towards Dandekar Bridge and jumped the divider near the bridge when he was overpowered by the police. However, he managed to hit two autorickshaws and a car before he was apprehended.
