Pune polls: NCP is second-time lucky in Pune

Pune is all set to be ruled once again by a coalition of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Congress given the fact that both the parties have expressed willingness to enter into a coalition with each other.

Pune is all set to be ruled once again by a coalition of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Congress given the fact that both the parties have expressed willingness to enter into a coalition with each other. The result of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), was declared on Friday, which saw the NCP emerge as a clear winner with 51 seats and Congress 28.

Voting for the 152 seats of the PMC, was conducted on Thursday, with only 51% voting recorded. The results of the voting was threw up quite a few surprises, with heavy weighs from all the parties biting dusts.  More than 50% of the sitting corporators lost their seats to new comers.

By far the biggest casualty of the  elections was NCP mayor Mohan Singh Rajpal who was defeated by the standing committee chairman of BJP Ganesh Bidkar from the KEM hospital panel by more than 1200 votes. Sitting corporators Nilesh Nikam and Shirkant Patil also lost.

Deputy mayor Prasanna Jagtap from Congress also lost his seat to Shrikant Jagtap of BJP by 2,000 votes.

The biggest casualty of the saffron alliance was Shyam Deshpande of Shiv Sena and Jyotsna Sardesphande of BJP. Both of them lost to MNS candidates. Independent corporator Ujjwal Keska also lost his seat to MNS.

Cross-voting in the panels resulted in MNS making a head way in the many of the BJP- Shiv Sena and NCP strong hold areas across the city. MNS with 29 seats emerged as the biggest winner of the 2012 house.

Congress dropped its seat count from 35 to 28 while BJP slightly improved its seat count from 25 to 26 and Shiv Sena actually lost five seats and by the end count it won 15 seats.

The elections were marked by rebellions from many parties although only two independents won.
