The National Society for Clean Cities (NSCC), Pune, a city-based NGO, has come out with a charter of demands that all aspiring candidates for the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) election should respond to before February 16.

The president of the NSCC, Satish Khot, said, “The NSCC has created a simple questionnaire in yes / no format, related to key issues plaguing the citizens. The responses of the candidates will help citizens understand each party’s stand on these issues.”

The 16-point charter of demands aims at knowing candidates’ views on various important issues that affect the daily lives of Puneites, such as early implementation of the green development plan (DP), which does not allow construction in bio-diversity parks; environment protection; anti-encroachment measures; citizen participation in local administrative decisions; equitable water supply and implementation of Supreme Court guidelines on solid waste management.

The NSCC is an umbrella organisation of mohalla / parisar committees that are highly active and effective in their local electoral wards.

Currently, there are over 50 such mohalla committees across Pune city that are under the NSCC.

These committees, as part of their voter awareness campaign, have planned interactive sessions with candidates.

This will enable the voters to get to know the candidates standing for elections from their area, and allow them to make an informed decision.

The candidates’ response to the NSCC’s charter of demands, along with local charter of demands framed by mohalla committees will be used for interactive sessions.

Khot said, “The NSCC has been interacting with the state election commission for updating voters’ lists and motivating citizens to cast their votes on the election day.”
