Pune polls: 70 people held in 48 hours for post-poll violence

The cases include non-cognisable offences related to minor poll code violations and serious crimes such as rioting, causing hurt and dacoity.

Pune police have arrested more than 70 people and booked over 150 activists belonging to different political parties in the last 48 hours at different police stations in the city.

The cases include non-cognisable offences related to minor poll code violations and serious crimes such as rioting, causing hurt and dacoity.

The cases were registered with Hadapsar, Mundhwa, Shivajinagar, Nigdi, Hinjewadi and Faraskhana police stations.

The Pimpri police station officials on Friday night arrested two and booked 106 activists of a political party for allegedly involved in rioting in Gandhinagar behind Kamgar Bhavan on Friday.

The Chinchwad police have arrested six people for allegedly involved in rioting at Walhekarwadi in Chinchwad area on Friday.

Bharti Limba Baranbe, 44, of Walhekarwadi lodged a complaint.

According to the police, Baranbe, an independent candidate, was allegedly attacked with sticks by the suspects, who forcibly entered his party office, on Friday afternoon. Later, they had also damaged vehicles. The Chinchwad police are investigating the case.

In another incident, Vijay Zumbar More, 42, has lodged a complaint with the Hadapsar police station alleging that six party workers had damaged his vehicles parked at his house over election defeat on Friday night.

The booked suspects have been identified as Datta Nawale, Rajendra Bade, Rajendra More, Lala Dalwai, Shailesh Pawar and Rakesh Wagh of Lata Housing society in Hadapsar.

According to the police, Nawale (Shiv Sena) lost to More, who won as an NCP candidate. Nawale and his party workers had allegedly visited More’s house and beaten up the complainant’s family members and damaged vehicles valued at Rs25,000. The Hadapsar police are investigating the case.
