In a bid to reduce traffic congestion and accidents in the city, the traffic branch of the Pune Police has shot off a 22-page-proposal titled ‘Pune city traffic improvement project 2011’ to the state government recently.
The traffic police proposal aims at reducing traffic congestion and road accidents in the city by 30% and proposes to gain control over construction of traffic signals, road markings, paint zebra crossings and construction of road dividers. It also wants to set up a traffic training cell.
At present, the respective civic bodies, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), the Khadki Cantonment Board and the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) have complete control over the basic infrastructure.
According to the proposal, the civic authorities were giving secondary importance to traffic infrastructure, as a result of which the number of road accidents were increasing every day. The proposal stated that traffic congestion had increased and 25%
road accidents had also occurred due to poor road infrastructure.
Deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Manoj Patil told DNA, “In Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi and Hyderabad, the traffic police have the authority to build traffic infrastructure in the city. As a result of which they have better conditions than us. We have put up the proposal so that we can improve the traffic condition in
the city."
