From the next academic year, the staff of the three departments — motor transport department, state police wireless department and state reserve police force — would be able to pursue higher studies at the Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU).

Official sources said the state home department has agreed to allow the staff of these three departments functioning under it to take up courses in the varsity.

The state home department in its special initiative has been helping the policemen to take up special degree courses at YCMOU.

According to the circular in 2010-11, as many as 3,431 policemen enrolled for pursuing the BA course in the state. Of this, 1,005 are at the rank of police officers like senior police inspectors, deputy commissioner of police (DCP) and deputy superintendent of police (DySP).

The BA course in police administration course is for those who are in the ranks of constable to assistant police inspector. The MBA course in public policy and management is for police sub-inspectors to DySP level officers.

Subjects like human rights, social studies, economics, information technology and psychology have been included in BA degree syllabus, while management, organisation behaviour and human resource management will be a part of MBA syllabus.
The courses are offered at subsidised fees for policemen from the ranks of constable to DySP.

An Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, requesting anonymity, told DNA, “This is a positive step taken by the state home department. It will definitely bring a positive change in these three departments and would also improve the confidence level of the staff.’’
