The Pune rural police unearthed a major scam of adulteration of engine oil after carrying out a raid in the Takve Budruk area of the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) on Saturday midnight.
They seized stocks valued at Rs83.34 lakh. Three suspects were arrested, identified as Sharad Bipat, owner of Bipat oil company; its manager, Shailendrakumar Singh, a resident of Uttar Pradesh; and owner of Beta Peral company, Sameer Jain, a resident of Jalgaon.
They were arrested under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, 1960, for cheating and negligent conduct with respect to fire or combustible matter and also under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955. A case was registered at Wadgaon Maval police station on Sunday.
Superintendent of police (rural), Sandip Karnik, told DNA that the suspects would mix crude oil with grease and reused oil and sell it under a brand name.
