A 37-year-old moneylender has been arrested for threatening to kill a borrower and his wife and trying to extort an amount of Rs18 lakh. The borrower, Chandrakant Ranganath Vakate, 43, had taken a loan of Rs2 lakh on two occasions over a period of three years to overcome a financial crunch he faced in his business.

The police have identified the moneylender as Rohidas Dyandev Satpute, 37, a resident of Lunkad Society in Vimannagar. He has been slapped with the charges of extortion and assault. He has been also slapped under the charges of Bombay Money-lenders
Act, 1946.

The incident came to light when Vakate, a resident of Wagholi, lodged a case against Satpute at Yerawada police station on Friday.

Sub-inspector Anil Mane, who is investigating the case, told DNA, “Vakate is a  mineral water dealer in city. In April 2010, he sought a loan of Rs2 lakh from Satpute at an interest rate of 10%. Accordingly, Satpute transferred the money in his bank account in April 2010. Vakate paid Rs20,000 each month in cash to Satpute. Once the loan was repaid, he borrowed another Rs2 lakh. Vakate repaid that loan to but records of payments were not maintained by either of them. On Thursday, Satpute went to Vakate’s house and demanded Rs18 lakh and forced him to sign a cheque of Rs9 lakh. On Friday, Vakate approached us and we registered the complaint.’’

He added, “Satpute has a money lending license since 2003 but as per the act, he can charge only three per cent interest.’’

On Saturday, Satpute was produced before the court of judicial magistrate (first class) SM Padolikar and has been remanded in police custody till Monday.

Assistant public prosecutor Kiran Bendbhar sought Satpute’s police custody for a week on the ground that the suspect is creating a nuisance and the police have to recover the cheque of Rs9 lakh from him and there are chances that suspect in past might have used similar tactics with other borrowers.’’
