Pune mayor Mohansingh Rajpal’s failed mission on Tuesday to meet chief minister (CM) Prithviraj Chavan has snowballed into a controversy. Congress, the alliance partner of Rajpal’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), has accused the mayor of lying.

Rajpal, who wanted to meet the CM to fill the posts of top officers of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), had said on Monday that a delegation would meet the CM on Tuesday. But the meeting did not materialise.

Rajpal told the media on Tuesday that he had discussed the issue with Congress city unit president, Abhay Chhajed, and the party’s group leader, Aba Bagul, on Monday evening. Bagul had told the mayor that he made a call to the CM’s office, but the CM could not spare time on Tuesday.

The mayor said he set out alone in the morning to meet the CM without appointment. On the way, when he called deputy chief minister, Ajit Pawar, he came to know that Chavan had gone to Chandrapur. So the mayor returned to Pune.

“Rajpal is lying as none from the Congress contacted the CM’s office,” Bagul claimed, adding that it was unfair for the mayor to create confusion by giving false statements.

“In fact, no party had asked Chavan for an appointment. The CM was present in the Vidhan Bhavan on Tuesday afternoon. Had the delegation gone there then they could have met him,” Bagul said.

Group leader of the Shiv Sena, Sham Deshpande, said the mayor’s statement was irresponsible as he had not informed party leaders about meeting the CM. Deshpande claimed that the CM denied appointment as the motive behind the meeting was to demand the transfer of municipal commissioner Mahesh Zagade.

Group leader of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) Ravindra Dhangekar said the mayor had cheated group leaders of political
parties.

Independent corporator Ujwal Keskar said it was the insult of mayor that he had to return midway. He said citizens would be forced to resort to agitation if the state government did not appoint a full-time municipal commissioner.
