The three city-based companies involved in the manufacture of Daksh, India’s first indigenously manufactured robot capable of diffusing an improvised explosive device (IED), are upbeat about their future prospects.

This follows the handing over of the first five Daksh remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to the Corps of Engineers of the Indian Army at the Research and Development Establishment (Engineers), Dighi, on Monday.

Speaking to DNA on Monday, managing director of the city-based Dynalog (India) Ltd, Akshay Adhalrao Patil, said that in the short term Dynalog was keen to get a share of the army’s order of 100 Daksh ROVs. “This is definitely our immediate goal, after which we plan to approach the Maharashtra police and other paramilitary forces to sell the product,’’ he said.

According to Patil, his company was also keen to look at overseas markets. “It will be interesting to pitch the Daksh against foreign products. It will be a good learning process,’’ Patil said.

Similarly, chief executive officer of city-based Theta Controls, Raja Mahbubani, said his company was keen to complete the delivery process of the first 20 Daksh units ordered by the army. “That is our first priority. After this, we are keen to bag a portion of the army’s next order,’’ Mahbubani said.

According to the IIT-Bombay alumnus, his company would market the product aggressively to the Maharashtra police and paramilitary agencies in the country. Mahbubani was of the opinion that his company would be in a position to plan Daksh variants in another 18 months, based on the needs of the market.

Likewise, general manager of Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL), AR Vaidya, felt that the ROV was ideally suited to serve not just the army, but the police and paramilitary forces.
